How to reduce incomplete form submissions

Before adding more checks, make sure a person can understand what your form is asking. Clear questions prevent avoidable correction work.

  1. Name the information you need. Replace “Details” with “Where will the equipment be used?”
  2. Explain required answers. Say why a delivery reference is needed and where to find it.
  3. Give a realistic example. “Reception team, Example Road office” is more useful than “Enter location”.
  4. Explain exceptions. If an answer does not apply, tell people what to write instead of forcing them to guess.
  5. Check related answers. A requested delivery date should follow the request date if your process requires that.
  6. Describe how to recover. Give a specific correction and the route to ask a person for help.

Try the form with someone who has not seen it before. Note where they hesitate, then improve those questions.
